Drive-in movie theaters are now 75 years old, according to this article in today’s Leader-Herald.
Albany Eye, an extremely popular blog, that had to shut down due to a conflict of interest between the blogger’s blog and his employment at WNYT Channel 13, wrote a great piece on drive-in theaters back in 2006.
Albany Eye blogged:
If you’re really fussy about your movie viewing, skip the drive-in. On the other hand, if you want a taste of the ultimate summer experience, you are in luck my friend. In a world where most drive-ins have been wiped off the map, the Capital Region is outdoor movie heaven. You can hit any number of drive-ins within a half hour or so of State and Pearl, so stop complaining about the heat and drag your sorry butt outside to see a movie.
You can read the rest of his post here and poke around in the Albany Eye archives, which have many posts still worth reading.
I added a follow-up to Albany Eye’s piece on my old blog. I said:
If you live out in this part of the Mohawk Valley you can choose between Ozoner-29 in Broadalbin or El-Rancho in Palatine Bridge. Ozoner 29 was built in 2003. El-Rancho has been around since 1952. At one point, in the late 70s or early 80s, District Attorney Howard Aison had to shut down El-Rancho. At the time, it was only showing pornographic movies, and the locals dubbed the theater, El-Rauncho. It has long since returned to family fare.
