21st Congressional District Race: Paul Tonko & Jim Buhrmaster On The Bailout, Energy, Abortion & Immigration

Here are some highlights of yesterday’s debate between 21st Congressional District candidates Jim Buhrmaster and Paul Tonko on WVTL. By the way, both men came across as very intelligent and articulate. It would be hard to declare a winner. I did notice that Paul Tonko tended to answer the questions a little less directly than Jim Buhrmaster. Also I would like to say that Bob Cudmore, Sam Zurlo and Mike Mancini did a great job asking questions and running a very fair even handed debate.

The Bailout Plan.

Paul Tonko said he would have voted for the final bailout plan but with serious reservations. Jim Buhrmaster said he would not have voted for it.

The War In Iraq.

Paul Tonko wants an immediate withdrawal of troops. Jim Buhrmaster wants to stick to the original plan of withdrawal by 2010 or 2011.

Abortion.

Paul Tonko said he was pro-choice. Jim Buhrmaster said he was personally against abortion but felt the woman should make the decision whether to abort or not.

Illegal Immigration.

Paul Tonko said all illegal immigrations should be allowed to become citizens except those who have a criminal record. Jim Buhrmaster said that we are all immigrants or descendants of immigrants who came here through legal means, therefore we should not make any exceptions for anyone. All should become citizens through the normal channels of legal immigration.

Energy.

Jim Buhrmaster proposed a comprehensive plan which includes alternative energy, increased drilling for domestic fuel, nuclear power and clean coal technology.

Paul Tonko’s emphasis was on reducing demand by making more energy efficient vehicles and products. He also is for alternative energy. He did seem to imply a cautious move toward increased drilling.

I have tried hard to accurately portray each candidate’s position as I understood it on WVTL yesterday, but will be happy to correct any errors.
